# CryptoTicr

> CryptoTicr is a small desk display that shows real-time prices and charts for any of the 1,000 largest cryptocurrencies, over the owner's own Wi-Fi. It is set up and controlled from a web browser on the same network, with no app, no account and no subscription, and it updates its own firmware.

Problem pages are organised by what the owner can see, and quote the exact words the ticker's screen or settings page shows, so a message someone has copied off their screen will usually find its page. - [Coins show no icon](https://cryptoticr.com/coin-shows-no-icon/): Coins are drawn by name and symbol with no logo, or the ticker showed Icons not ready yet. The logo pack is missing or damaged; the ticker fetches it by itself.

- [I forgot the settings password](https://cryptoticr.com/forgot-the-settings-password/): Nobody can look up or reset the settings password. The way back in is a factory reset, which erases Wi-Fi and settings; an unlocked browser can remove it.
- [The five-restart factory reset is not working](https://cryptoticr.com/factory-reset-gesture-not-working/): You replugged the ticker five times and it did not reset: no circles appeared, or the count started over. The timing, and when the gesture cannot fire.
- [I lost the ticker's address](https://cryptoticr.com/lost-the-tickers-address/): The bookmark or the address you wrote down no longer opens the page. Routers hand out addresses that can change; the ticker shows its current one.

- [The QR code won't scan](https://cryptoticr.com/qr-code-wont-scan/): Your phone's camera does not react to the ticker's QR code, or opens the wrong thing. Distance, glare and the code's short life; typing is the fallback.
- [Import failed](https://cryptoticr.com/import-failed/): Import answered Import failed: not a settings file, or another reason. The file was not one the page exported, or the ticker could not take it.
- [Wrong code when setting the password](https://cryptoticr.com/wrong-code-when-setting-the-password/): The lock dialog says That code didn't match the one on your ticker. The four-digit code expires after a couple of minutes; type the fresh one on the screen.
- [Unlock refuses the 4-digit code](https://cryptoticr.com/unlock-refuses-the-4-digit-code/): You typed the four digits from the ticker's screen into Unlock and it said Not that one. The code only set the password up; unlock with the password.
- [Too many password tries](https://cryptoticr.com/too-many-password-tries/): The Unlock box says Too many tries, wait N seconds. After five wrong passwords in a row the ticker holds off for a while, longer each time; never for good.
- [My Wi-Fi network is not in the setup page's list](https://cryptoticr.com/my-wifi-is-not-in-the-list/): The list shows other networks but not yours, or says no networks were found. The usual reasons: 5 GHz only, out of range, hidden, or a stale scan.
- [The CT setup network is not in my phone's Wi-Fi list](https://cryptoticr.com/setup-network-not-in-my-wifi-list/): What to check when you cannot find the ticker's CT network: whether the ticker is in setup mode at all, and how to get it there.

- [No address was given to me](https://cryptoticr.com/no-address-was-given/): The router let the ticker on but never handed it an address. Usually a retry or a router restart; sometimes an approval list in the router's app.
- [The start screen says it is waiting, retrying, or rejoining](https://cryptoticr.com/stuck-on-waiting-for-an-address/): After setup or a restart the ticker sits on its logo with a box such as `My server says: wait.` or `Waiting for an address...`. What each one means.
- [Joined, but my server is quiet](https://cryptoticr.com/joined-but-my-server-is-quiet/): The ticker is on your Wi-Fi but cannot reach its own server through it. A sign-in page, a filter, or an internet outage; how to tell which.
- [The signal here is very weak](https://cryptoticr.com/signal-too-weak-to-join/): The ticker can barely hear the router from where it is and could not complete the join. Distance is the fix.
- [I lost sight of the router](https://cryptoticr.com/lost-sight-of-the-router-while-joining/): The router's beacon disappeared partway through the join. A retry usually catches it; distance and interference are the causes.
- [This network wants a username](https://cryptoticr.com/network-wants-a-username/): The network uses business-style sign-in with a username and password, which the ticker cannot enter. Use a home network or a hotspot.
- [Your router and I could not agree on a security type](https://cryptoticr.com/security-type-not-supported/): The router is set to a security mode the ticker does not have, usually WPA3 only. Set the router to WPA2 or mixed mode.
- [Nothing came back when I asked to join](https://cryptoticr.com/nothing-came-back-when-joining/): The ticker can see the network but got no answer to its join request. Usually a moment's bad luck; sometimes an approval list.

- [Can I change the colors?](https://cryptoticr.com/can-i-change-the-colors/): Yes: ten colorsets, applied instantly, and within each the Volume, Market Cap and Rank colors can be set. The up/down price pair belongs to the colorset.
- [Can I lock the settings?](https://cryptoticr.com/can-i-lock-the-settings/): Yes: Device → Lock adds a view-only password, confirmed by a four-digit code on the ticker's screen. Viewing stays open; changes need the password.
- [Can I set it up from a computer?](https://cryptoticr.com/can-i-set-it-up-from-a-computer/): Yes. Any device with Wi-Fi and a browser can join the ticker's setup network and open its setup page: a Windows PC, a Mac, a tablet or a phone.

- [Where does the data come from?](https://cryptoticr.com/where-does-the-data-come-from/): CoinGecko, through CryptoTicr's own server, which caches it and serves every ticker. The settings page says Powered by: CoinGecko.
- [Can I check for updates myself?](https://cryptoticr.com/can-i-check-for-updates-myself/): There is no check-now button on the settings page. Restarting the ticker brings the next check forward to five minutes; otherwise it checks hourly.
- [Can it show prices in another currency?](https://cryptoticr.com/can-it-show-prices-in-another-currency/): No. Every price, market cap and volume is in US dollars with a $ in front; there is no currency setting.
- [Do I need a phone?](https://cryptoticr.com/do-i-need-a-phone/): No. A phone is the handiest way to set up and to scan the address QR code, but a tablet or computer with Wi-Fi does everything a phone does here.
- [Does it work with mesh routers?](https://cryptoticr.com/does-it-work-with-mesh-routers/): Yes, as long as the mesh offers 2.4 GHz. Band steering can hide that band from the ticker; a fixed name for the 2.4 GHz side fixes it.
- [Does the screen dim at night?](https://cryptoticr.com/does-the-screen-dim-at-night/): Yes, when you turn on Nighttime quiet hours: set From and to times and a Night level, and the ticker dims and returns by itself using the time from its server.
- [How many coins are available?](https://cryptoticr.com/how-many-coins-are-available/): The 1,000 largest coins by market value, each with its logo. The list is refreshed by the ticker's server, so new coins appear as they earn a ranking.
- [Is there an app?](https://cryptoticr.com/is-there-an-app/): No app: the ticker serves its own settings page, and any browser on your Wi-Fi opens it. Nothing to install on a phone or computer.
- [What if I forget the settings password?](https://cryptoticr.com/i-forgot-the-settings-password/): It cannot be recovered or reset by anyone. A browser that is still unlocked can remove it; otherwise a factory reset, which erases Wi-Fi and settings.
