Can I check for updates myself?

Not from the settings page; there is no button for it, on purpose. The ticker checks by itself five minutes after every power-up and every hour after that, so a new release reaches every ticker within an hour of being published.

If you want the check sooner, restart the ticker (Device → Restart, or unplug and replug): the first check after a start comes at five minutes. The version you are running is on the Firmware: line at the top of the page. See Which firmware do I have?.
