The time zone and how the ticker knows the time

No clock of its own

The ticker has no battery and no clock. It takes the current time from its server with every price it fetches, so the time is refreshed constantly while the ticker is online. If it goes a whole day without a reply, it stops trusting its count: quiet hours stand down and the screen returns to the daytime level rather than dimming at a guessed hour.

Where the zone comes from

Universal time says nothing about where the ticker is. The first time you open the settings page, the page reads the zone your phone or computer reports and sends it to the ticker; the page says I quietly take the zone your phone or computer reports and remember it. The row under the quiet-hours times lists the United States zones first, then a set of world zones, and can be changed at any time, for example after opening the page from a borrowed laptop abroad.

Daylight saving

Daylight saving needs nothing from you and no firmware update: the ticker knows your zone, and the rules for every zone are kept up to date on the server.

If never told

A ticker that has never been given a zone uses New York time, with its daylight saving worked out on the ticker itself.
