After an update

On the ticker

The first start after an update looks like any other start: the start screen, Connecting to: and your network, then the coins. The ticker reports in to its server once so the update is known to have landed. If the update came with a new logo pack, the pack is fetched in the background on this first start; see Icon updates.

For a routine release nothing more appears on the glass. After a major jump, from v1 to v2 for example, a rotation card joins the coins: a party horn, New firmware! in green, the version in a green badge, and (reload browser page) under it. It shows twice per power-up, ten minutes apart, until you open the settings page.

On the settings page

A settings page that is already open when the ticker comes back on the newer version reloads itself once, because the page’s own code is served by the ticker and must match the firmware it now runs. The reloaded page carries a banner with Lee’s photo: Welcome to v2.07!, a What's new? link that opens the release’s list of changes, and Lee here (Ohio), the software engineer who wrote the firmware for your ticker. Dismiss it with the ×; the ticker records that you have seen it, so no other phone or browser shows it again for this version.

The banner appears for a version you have not been shown. A fix release that arrives while you were already current on the previous one stays quiet, except after a major jump, when the banner always shows. What is kept

Everything: coins, colors, timings, the Wi-Fi network, a fixed address, a settings password. An update rewrites the firmware and nothing else. Settings that arrived from an older format are read as they are; the ticker’s storage keeps every earlier meaning.
