The start screen says it is waiting, retrying, or rejoining

Symptoms

The ticker shows its logo and version, My settings are here: with an address (or your network’s name and a router icon), and a box at the bottom that keeps changing its headline and a try counter: My server says: wait., My server's having trouble., Not your fault. Retrying..., Rejoining your Wi-Fi..., Waiting for an address..., Reaching my server..., Wi-Fi OK, no internet yet. or No internet yet. No coins appear.

Cause

Before it shows prices the ticker asks its server for a go-ahead, and it stays on this screen until it gets one. The headline says which step is holding it up. My server says: wait. and My server's having trouble. mean the internet works and the server itself answered, the delay is at the ticker’s end of the world, and it clears when the server does. Rejoining your Wi-Fi... means the link to your router dropped; Waiting for an address... means the router accepted the ticker but has not handed it an address yet. Reaching my server... and no internet yet mean your network is up but nothing beyond the router is answering. The ticker keeps trying by itself, every 20 seconds or so, and restarts itself once if a stretch of tries gets nowhere.

Fix

  1. Read the headline and give it a minute. Most of these clear on their own.
  2. Rejoining your Wi-Fi... for more than a couple of minutes: check the router is on and within range; the ticker restarts itself and tries again if the link stays down.
  3. Waiting for an address... for more than a couple of minutes: restart the router; some routers hold new devices until approved in their app, see Router settings that block new devices.
  4. No internet yet. or Reaching my server...: check that another device on the same Wi-Fi can reach the internet. If it cannot, the fault is your internet connection, not the ticker.
  5. My server says: wait. or My server's having trouble.: nothing to do; the ticker is working and waiting for its server.
